The Second Sunday of September is Pet Memorial Sunday.
Rituals build community, creating a meeting ground where people can share deep feelings or…keep a solemn silence.
The International Association of Pet Cemeteries and Crematories established the second Sunday of September as Pet Memorial Sunday and for the last 20 years I have sponsored an event to recognize the loss of our beloved pets.
Our Pet Memorial Sunday ceremony
The event involves presentations by three speakers:
- Dr Mike Pensenstadler, VMD – “Our Last Moments Together”
- Ms Elizabeth Babcock, LCSW – ” Our Grief Response”
- Ms Bernadette Kazmarski, artist/writer – “Loving After Loss”
We share 50-word tributes that each family has written, then together we commit ourselves to let go of the pain, guilt and grief and we watch as a flock of doves is released skyward.
Each year, the 50-word tributes are united with pictures of the pet into a Tribute Scroll that is a memento of the event and is available on my website on the Tribute Scroll page.
There is no charge for this event, but registration is required since information will be exchanged via the internet.
