Let me give you a little history of this event.

The International Association of Pet Cemeteries and Crematories established the second Sunday of September as Pet Memorial Sunday and for the last 15 years I have sponsored an event to recognize the loss of our beloved pets.

Usually we gather under a tent, with pictures of our pets displayed prominently, and listen to three speakers:

  • Dr Mike Pensenstadler, VMD – “Our Last Moments Together”
  • Ms Elizabeth Babcock, LCSW – ” Our Grief Response”
  • Ms Bernadette Kazmarski, artist/writer – “Loving After Loss”

Usually, I read 50-word tributes that each family has written and provided to me prior to the event. We then together commit ourselves to let go of the pain, guilt and grief and we watch as a flock of doves is released skyward.

COVID has made it unsafe and unwise to gather together under a tent in close proximity to strangers. So how to provide this event with the restrictions that are now our norm?

This year, the three speakers’ presentations will be sent to you in three separate emails on Monday, September 7th (Dr. Mike), Wednesday, September 9th (Elizabeth) and Friday, September 11th (Bernadette). You will be able to watch/read these presentations whenever you would like (before or after the event).

In the past, I have taken the 50-word tributes and united them with pictures of the pet into a Tribute Scroll that has basically been a memento of the event and is available to look at about a month AFTER the event.

THIS YEAR, I am asking for the tributes and the photos BEFORE THE EVENT so that the Tribute Scroll is unveiled the day of the event to be watched on our cell phones from our vehicles.

There are two things you need to do NOW in order to fully participate in this event.

First, chose a photo of your pet that you like and submit it via the email link below. Remember to type your pet’s name and your last name (ie. FLUFFY SMITH) into the subject line so that I will  know who it is. Kindly submit this photo as soon as possible but no later than August 27.

You can just send an email of your pet’s photo to

As soon as I receive your photo, I will send you an email requesting your 50-word tribute.

If you don’t want to submit a photo, that is just fine too. This event is for you and encourages your peace with such a difficult loss. There is no right or wrong way to participate.

If you have any questions about this, please do not hesitate to call me at 412/220-7800.
